A terroir in the making

Let the land speak

WELCOME TO ALTOS LAS HORMIGAS

Listening to nature

is working with it

Mendoza is a mountain region; its wines should show where they come from.

Mendoza is a mountain region; its wines should show where they come from. Modern fruit bombs are but a caricature of Mendoza Terroir, made to please the wine beginner and the casual consumer, and not making the effort to find a balance that respects origin.

We want the freshness of the mountains to shine in our wines, and at the same time we want the different fruit characters of the various sites, to show the sunny climate that begot them.

More fruit, less oak

AN ECOSYSTEM WITH A VINEYARD

JARDIN DE HORMIGAS

“The only music a vineyard needs is the singing of birds”

Gianfranco Soldera

The team

Italy, Argentina, and Chile join this group.

Our vision has always been to create a melting pot of cultures, experience, and insight- each member contributing towards one unwavering goal: to create authentic wines that speak of their origin. Combine the strong wine cultures of Italy, Argentina, and Chile, then add in a Terroir PhD, worldwide winemaking experience, local viticulture, and tie it all together with a strong personal bond, and we firmly believe the final result cannot be anything less than exciting.

Attilio Pagli

WINEMAKER

Attilio Pagli is one of Italy’s most respected winemakers and one of Altos’ most passionate. He first arrived in Mendoza to create a Sangiovese similar to those he was known for in Italy, but quickly learned that Mendoza had no intention of being Tuscany. Instead, he fell in love with the old vines of Malbec. He believes that the personality of terroir is what really inspires his commitment to winemaking.

Antonio Morescalchi

Founder, Vice President

Antonio Morescalchi started his career as a producer of wine in 1988 in his father vineyard, in Montecatini Alto, Tuscany. Antonio founded Altos las Hormigas in 1995 with Alberto Antonini, and was ever since dedicated to build this company from its foundations. Expert taster of wine, Antonio has dedicated himself to all aspects of the industry, from production to sales and marketing.

Alberto Antonini

Founder, Winemaker

Alberto Antonini is one of the most recognized winemakers across the globe, and brings new ideas and an unparalleled palate to the Altos Las Hormigas team. He blends modern techniques with ancient tradition in the pursuit of honest winemaking, and is an integral contributor in helping Argentine wines gain international appreciation.

Pedro Parra

Terroir Specialist, Ph.D.

Pedro Parra is South America’s only terroir and soil specialist, with extensive academic and field experience. Pedro has devoted his career to studying soil profiles and their influence upon wine. Together with the Altos Las Hormigas team, Pedro has covered every inch of Mendoza soil. He plays an indispensable role in Altos’ progress towards terroir-driven, ageworthy Malbec.
